Confidence in Your Body: A Guide to Achieving It

We can all have a knock of confidence at some stage of our lives. It might be down to a broken relationship, a tough time in the workplace, or simply a negative mindset. We can all be guilty of listening to that inner voice that tells us we are no good, instead of silencing it like we should. Body confidence isn’t something you just get, it takes some time to build that confidence up and boost your self-esteem as well as your own self-belief.

Negativity can be crippling, and it can take hold of you, leaving you with an uphill battle to feeling positive and happy in your own skin. But it shouldn’t be this way, and it certainly doesn’t have to be your normality. Which is why I thought it would be worth sharing with you some of the ways you can build up your body confidence and feel happier in yourself!

Your mindset plays a big part in what you think and feel

Our minds are powerful tools, and we can often take them for granted and neglect them in some way. But mental health is vitally important. A negative mindset is when you start to think negatively about situations, circumstances and yourself. It’s opinion on what might happen, how you look and what people think of you and your surroundings. It can really take hold of you if you don’t try and change the habit of your thought process. It may feel forced at first, but it’s worth thinking long and hard and switching your thoughts from negative to positive.

For example, you may think that you look tired today, but instead of focusing on that switch to a positive by thinking that it’s your body’s way of telling you that you need rest. Then focus on what you will do like enjoy a long soak in the bath or get an early night. At first, it will be hard, but the more times you do it, the more you will start to think about things in a different and more positive way, without you even realizing you are doing it.

Take pride in your appearance

Often times, it’s the small things that can give us a boost, and feeling happy with how we look is one way to do it. This isn’t preaching that the only way you will feel happy in your skin is by applying a lot of makeup and dressing up, but it is more to do with how these actions can make you feel.

Looking presentable in your mind is a boost, and if someone comments on that, you feel even better. You may feel ready to take on your day! Invest in some new makeup or tools, watch some tutorial videos, and practice your techniques. Create perfect eyebrows with Brow Wiz or try your hand at contouring. It can even be as simple as applying lipstick in a bright shade. Do what makes you feel comfortable and happy.

Don’t compare yourself to others

There is a saying that states no one is as unique as you because there is only one version of you. So celebrate that fact and don’t compare yourself to others. Every person you come into contact with is at a different stage of their life journey. Perhaps ahead of you in their career, or more successful. But that doesn’t mean to say that you won’t achieve your dreams at the right time. That successful person could have spent years working hard to get to where they need to be, as will you if that is what you want. Instead, focus your attention on your actions and life journey.

Focus on action rather than appearance

There may be parts of your body that affect your body confidence. Perhaps feeling like you have a tummy because you have had children, for example, but instead of focusing on the appearance ask yourself what you did. You brought life into the world, so celebrate that! The same can be said for any part of your body. Focus on the action that part of your body performs, and not what it looks like. Celebrate the flaws, they make you who you are. You are perfectly imperfect!

Be kind to yourself

Finally, the last piece of advice would be to be kind to yourself. Treat yourself just how you treat other people you love and admire. If you are giving yourself a hard time in your head, ask yourself whether you would say that your best friend, your mom, or your sister? Would you? Probably not, so why are you any different? Self-love is the best love!

I hope this guide is helpful in improving confidence in your body over time. Which of these tips resonate with you the most?

  1. NOT comparing ourselves to others is hard, but it’s so important. There is always going to be someone with more money, a better job, a fun “looking” lifestyle, etc… we’ll never be happy if we want it and who knows, they may not be happy with all that they have!

  4. Self-love and acceptance in my opinion truly are the keys to happiness and peace. We all spend too much time trying to look like those we admire instead of seeing beauty in ourselves. Thanks for the reminder.

  8. One of the most difficult things for me is comparing my progress to those around me. You are so right, instead of focusing on others success, we’re all different points in our journey.
