When you have an affinity for makeup, you invest in your growing collection of foundations, concealers, blushes, contour palettes, eye shadows, mascaras, and lipsticks. You experiment with various application techniques, and you determine the most flattering way to wear your favorites to compliment your skin tone and apparel.
Every modern woman understands that getting ready is a process; choosing the appropriate outfit, doing your hair, and finishing off the look with an artistic craftsmanship as you apply makeup. When you are finally ready to go out, you should just need to grab your purse and shoes and dart out the door. But have you ever glanced at yourself after leaving the house and noticed a line around your jaw and cheekbones left from your foundation? Or find that you put on way too much blush?

If your makeup is not applied and blended correctly, you will be walking around looking like you are wearing a mask. Since it is never anyone’s intention to appear like a circus clown, it is important to consider more than just your makeup products as part of your routine. Make sure the lighting in your bathroom is flattering and not deceiving. Experts say natural light is ideal for makeup application, but reality tells us it is not always an option, and even when it is, there are still some challenges with light seeping in from a window. Here are some tips and tricks for lighting up your bathroom so you can be confident your makeup looks flawless in any light.
Sit and Face a Window
If you have the ability to sit directly in front of an uncovered window, it will give you the best luminescence for makeup application. Make sure the light is hitting your face straight on so it does not cast shadows. The shadows can lead to unbalanced applications. If you do not have access to a window in your bathroom, then it is important to use these same principals with whatever light source is available. Most bathrooms have overhead lighting which again casts undesirable shadows. If possible, position yourself, to be directly in front of the light, not below. Vanities lit from the side, provide a great source of lighting since it is equally distributed over the face.
Use the Proper Light Bulbs
When you glance at the light bulb selection of a hardware store you can quickly get overwhelmed with the seemingly endless options. LED, fluorescent, incandescent and halogen bulbs line the aisles. You have to determine the proper wattage, color, and size. Makeup artists and enthusiasts agree bulbs that emit a warm white light ranging from 75-100 watts are most flatter for nearly all skin tones. You can also play around with lit wall signs as way to add decorative lighting such as this “follow the call of the disco ball neon sign“. It’s a fun way to add some personality to your beauty space and makes a great backdrop for photos!
Use a Ring Light
YouTube beauty gurus have made ring lights a must-have for anyone serious about their beauty and skincare routine. Ring lights are known for instantly making skin look flawless, but ring lights with magnifying mirrors are ideal for achieving precision with every detail. The vast majority of ring lights are made with LED lights, which have a long battery life. Therefore, they are not only perfect for makeup applications but also environmentally friendly. I bought one for filming my Youtube videos and the difference in lighting is amazing!

Lighten up the Colors in Your Bathroom
Changing the light bulbs and uncovering a window are important if you want to manifest the perfect ambiance for makeup application, but if the walls, cabinets, and countertops are dark or overly saturated with a color, they will have a direct effect on the hue throughout the room. Consider painting your walls a soft, neutral color or some variation of white. Install cabinets made of lighter woods, like maple or pine. Most importantly, however, is the color of the countertops. Add a touch of elegance and sophistication to a bathroom with a marble countertop. Marble is known for its stunning off-white color with unique veining. It is a luxury, high-end countertop product that will help you ensure your makeup and your bathroom look incredible.

Me too! Now I’m trying to mastermind how to change the location of my lighting!
It’s really true that we should use the right light bulbs. And because most of my lights in my place are in the yellowish color and my bathroom has a poor lighting, I prefer using my ring light when applying my makeup.

I hear you. The daylight bulbs are also helpful.
I love to sit or usually stand lol in front of a window when doing my make up. I do use a ring light sometimes but if I can use natural light that’s my first choice.
Natural light is my first choice as well Keisha. Thanks for checking out my post!
I’m gonna finish reading your post, but that photo of the bathroom definitely has me in awe. If only my bathroom looked like that.

There’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to putting on makeup. Youtube has been great for that in my case!
This is a great article for me since I don’t “adult” when it comes to make-up. I am a professional however and my job demands I spruce things up from time-to-time. Your tips and insights will certainly help me when I need to step it up. Thank you
I’m glad it was helpful Lia!
Lighting is definitely important. My bathroom doesn’t have windows so there’s no natural light. After reading your post, I realize that I may need a ring light! I’ve seen them on YouTube. I’m going to check them out! Thanks for sharing.
My last bathroom didn’t have a window either so I had to get those daylight bulbs, which helped a lot!
Good tips! I’m old school. I like to stand in front of my bathroom mirror. My car mirror is bomb though!
Lol the closeness of the car mirror is definitely a plus!
Great tips! I’ve been wanting to invest in a vanity mirror and small chair but they’re so costly and I’m already trying to downsize. Until then I guess I’ll stick with my bathroom and living room mirrors lol
