My Top 7 Purple Lipsticks!

Hey beautiful! I’ve been meaning to write this post about my top 7 purple lipsticks  for days now but with work, my kids sports activities, and my allergies suddenly whacking me in the face, I kept having to put it off. Then with the sudden, shocking, and very sad death of the iconic and legendary artist, Prince (whose favorite color was purple) I knew I had to do my ode to this royal color.

Purple lips were hot and trendy this past Winter season and are still on the hot lipstick list this Spring and upcoming Summer! I’m so glad about that because I didn’t want to have to retire them. Just to give you a brief background, I was never really a lipstick person until about maybe 6 months ago. I actually wasn’t much into makeup, despite how many eye shadow palettes I own. My everyday look involved a NYX concealer, mascara, eye liner, and one of many shimmery lip glosses. That’s it. And that was fine…at least I thought I looked fine (lol) until someone added me to a makeup group on Facebook. There, I saw pics and pics of these beautifully made-up women in beautiful shades of chocolate and caramel. Some rocking a more “natural” look and some going for a more dramatic look with pretty pops of color I never dreamed of wearing myself. But what really got my attention the most was the lip colors they were wearing. Colors I never would have even considered until I saw these women with complexions more like mine, absolutely killing it with bold reds, purples, pinks, and even blues! The more time I spent scrolling through the group page each day, the more money I spent venturing out and trying new lipsticks one at a time. Until I became a lipstick junkie and I was buying them 4 or 5 at a time! Through my many color and brand trials, I instantly fell in love with matte lipsticks and found a new favorite color: Purple!

There are many great shades of purple lipsticks out there from drug-store brands to more high-end brands but being the frugal chick that I am, I stick to drug store and beauty supply store lipsticks. Plus, if I end up not liking it I don’t feel to bad about just being out a few bucks. The 7 lippies I’ve listed here are all matte lip colors so if you decide to try any of them, you need to be sure your lips are moisturized before applying it to your lips.

#7 – milani: matte fearless

Milani has many great shades. Matte Fearless is more of a deep purple and plum color mixture. It goes on very smoothly and not badly priced at less than $7. This can be purchased at your local Wal-Mart, Target, or drug store.

#6 – ruby kisses: mauve it

Mauve It is one of the many Ruby Kisses lipsticks I own. I buy this brand from my local beauty supply store (abbreviated BSS in online lingo). This is a light purple that isn’t too bright but just adds enough pop of color to liven up a natural look a bit. It lasts a good while throughout the day and I typically have to freshen it up after eating a meal.  Priced at less than $3 each, you can’t go wrong trying this one.

#5 – Absolute New york: boysen Berry

Boysen Berry is another great one for an everyday look. Not bright and not dark but just enough purple to spruce up your lips. This one also goes on smoothly and you can build up the color by applying multiple layers if you want. Absolute NY is another brand I buy at my local BSS and they have many different lipstick colors. The price for this brand of lipstick is also budget friendly at $3 to $4, depending on where you go.

#4 – Wet n wild: ravin’ raisin

Ravin’ Raisin is part of Wet n Wild’s Megalast lip color line, and I own just about ALL of them! Ravin’ Raisin was actually my very first purple lip color and I love it so much that it started my obsession with purple lipstick. At one point, I wore it just about every day for a good while and I get compliments on it all the time! I’ve worn it so much that I had to get a stock photo of the color because mine is almost down to the nub lol! Most times I wear this, I get asked if it’s a MAC lip color. According to some, it is a dupe for MAC’s limited edition Goddess of the Sea lipstick and may be a similar color to other higher priced purple lippies but for about $2, I’ll stick with Wet n Wild. You can find Wet n Wild at your local drug store.

#3 – ruby kisses: sweet thrill

Another fave by Ruby Kisses is Sweet Thrill. Now we’re getting into brighter territory. This matte lip color goes above the regular and adds more of a pop of color to brighten your look! It’s a very pretty purple with a bit of pink, but not too much. Again, these are available at most beauty supply stores for just around $3.

#2 – colourpop: bedazzled

Through this Facebook group I told you about, I was put on to this wonderful brand named Colourpop. They are only sold online (www.colourpop.com) and at only $6 a piece, their Ultra Matte liquid lipsticks are worth every penny! Bedazzled is a rich, deep purple color that is great for a night out or even during the day if you like bold dark lips for a day time look. Either way, it looks great on many skin tones. My tip for liquid lip color in general is to apply it to your top and bottom lips separately, without pressing your lips together. That may cause some uneven-ness when it dries. I also like to let it dry for a few seconds without letting my lips touch. You can build the color up on this one as well by applying a little more at a time. Their ultra mattes have long-lasting staying power too! For me, it lasts all day unless I eat something that may have an oily substance (i.e. salad dressing, gravy) and even then just a little comes off so there’s not too much to re-apply.

#1 – colourpop: zipper

Another Colourpop favorite of mine is Zipper. It’s not as dark as Bedazzled but it definitely makes its presence known and boldly accentuates your look, which makes it a great daytime lippie for me personally. Again, these ultra mattes have great staying power, little to no transfer, and only a little touching up needed after eating. Now, I have found that I have to be sure to moisturize my lips more when using liquid matte lipsticks so don’t say I didn’t warn you! These aren’t terribly drying on the lips but they are more drying than the regular lipsticks.

Welp, there you have it! My top 7 purple lipsticks. You can see my swatch of each of them against my skin tone below for reference. These are the ones I wear the most and get the most compliments on when I wear them. A few of them may be close in color but they do have their differences, which makes it totally okay to own a bunch of them 😉 especially when the prices are so great! I have nothing against more expensive brands but if given a choice between a lip color that costs less than $5 and one that’s upwards of $20, I’m going with the one that’s lighter on my pocket. I have 2 kids and a dog to feed. Ain’t nobody got time for that!top 7 purple lipstick arm swatch sassy critic blog

If you’ve ever felt like brighter or bolder lip colors are not for you, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and try it! You may be pleasantly surprised at how great it looks on you!

If you own any of the ones I listed I’d love to know how you like it! And if you have any other budget-friendly purple lipsticks on your must-have list, tell me about them in the comments! And don’t forget to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

    1. Yes that one is really nice Sheridan! I was never a fan of purple anything until I became a lipstick junkie lol!

  1. These are gorgeous, I love the fearless! I am always a bit nervous about lipstick bc I don’t wear it much. When I do put it on, I am always checking bc I am a bit self conscious! I am a huge fan of LVC (live victoriously cosmetics), so when I do my out of the norm make up that is what I use.

    1. Thanks, I’m glad you like them! Let me know if you check any of them out for yourself! I was self-conscious too when I started wearing bolder colors but they have a way of boosting your confidence too 😉 Rock it girl! I need to check out LVC…

  2. I have dark skin so I never think purple looks good on me. But I just found a burgundy that I love. Now that I see that works, I think there may be hope for me and a purple shade. Annnnnnd this post is gonna be a great source for me to find one. Looking like the Ravin Raisin may be the one for me!!!

    1. Yes girl, there is hope!! Trust me, it’s all about finding the right shade for your skin tone and in my opinion, many of them look great on darker skin tones. Let me know when you find one (or a few) that you like!

  3. These all look cute, but since I am into mattes at the moment for some reason, I will have to try the Milani one. Never heard of that brand, but will be checking it out soon 🙂
    Thanks for the post!

  4. Okay now purple is my all-time favorite color and that colourpop bedazzled is calling my name. I’ll have to try that for sure!!! I love the zipper color too!

    1. Hey Shantel! Yes I highly recommend those Colourpop lippies! There are many other colors I want from them but I’ve been restraining myself lol!

    1. I’m glad it helped you Aleya! I want to try their nudes and pinks myself. Which ones do you recommend??

  5. My go to Staple for the last 5-6 years has been Ravin’ Raisin , it is a perfect nude like purple for me. It was taken from many of my rite aid stores here so for a few years I didn’t have it. But I found a place in NYC that has it and I brought a couple. Good post!!!!

    1. Oh Kim that one is pretty! I have 2 similar vampy purple lippies too (not by MAC) but I haven’t worn them yet…now I need to revisit them! 😉

    1. Some are pretty bold Tania but it’s nice that there’s a range of colors available for different preferences 🙂
