Staying healthy and being on a strict budget doesn’t always don’t go hand in hand. The cost of healthcare and insurance is rising all the time, and many over the counter medications and treatments are incredibly expensive.
Leading a healthy lifestyle can also come at a cost as healthy food and ingredients are often extortionately priced, and gym memberships aren’t exactly cheap. It’s crazy to see how much more it costs to eat healthy foods vs. junk food. You may think that if you don’t have much money in the bank, you might not be able to afford to stay healthy. Thankfully, that doesn’t have to be the case. You can follow these tips to ensure you and your bank account stay healthy.
Budget-Friendly Health Tips
Eat Seasonal Produce 🍓
Every food has its own season when it is available in abundance. This is especially the case with fruit and vegetables. For example, there are summer fruits such as strawberries and peaches, and winter veggies including Brussel sprouts and turnip. Ideally, you should be eating foods once they come into season.
When foods are in season, it is incredibly cheap. But as farmers and producers have to use expensive methods to grow fruit and veg out of season, buying seasonal produce at the wrong time of year can push your grocery bill right up.
Rethink Your Health Plan 🤔
We’re still waiting for single-payer healthcare, which you can find out more about at the Covered California Offices, so until then we have to deal with very high health insurance bills. But did you know that you might be able to get a better deal on your health insurance simply by switching your provider? Insurance providers regularly offer deals and discounts to new customers, so it’s worth taking a look at the various offers available every six months or so. This may be a better option for those who do not have or refuse coverage from their employer.
Use Free Health Apps 📱
There are now lots of free apps that can help you keep on top of your health. For instance, you might want to download one which can help you track your diet. You just need to input everything you eat throughout the day and it will let you know your daily calorie intake.
Alternatively, you could download a fitness app such as Strava that can track your bike rides and jogs. You can set yourself training goals through the app too. It’s a lot cheaper than joining the gym! There are thousands of free or very cheap apps available to download now, so check the Android or iTunes store to see what’s available!

Find a Pharmacy Savings Program 💊
Some pharmacies give their regular customers the chance to sign up to a savings program. By doing so, you will be able to receive a variety of discounts on your medications. For example, Walmart has one of these programs. You can sign up for a month at a time. During that month, you can buy all of Walmart’s own meds for just a few bucks each. That’s a lot more reasonable than the regular price, trust me!
As you can see, staying healthy doesn’t have to drain your savings. There are lots of ways to keep healthy on the cheap!
