Beauty Hacks: How To Look Radiant After a Bad Night’s Sleep

I’ve been there. You probably have too. Everyone has been there. You have a really important meeting the next day, and if there is ever a night you need your beauty sleep it’s the night before. But, you lay there in your bed unable to sleep a wink and just as you close your eyes your alarm goes off!

It is so tempting to hit the snooze button (which I often do), pull the covers over your head, and hope that in the next five minutes you somehow acquire Bernard’s watch and stop time. Alas, that doesn’t happen, and you are – in addition to being extremely tired – really late.

At this point, it can seem almost impossible to feel put together and ready to take on a busy day, however, all hope is not lost. Here are a few simple tips that can help you to look like you had eight hours sleep, even though it was much less.

Look Like You Got A Good Night’s Sleep

Avoid The Snooze Button

It can be hard but, like previously mentioned, it can be extremely tempting to hit the snooze button several times to try and catch up on a few precious minutes of sleep. However, it can have the adverse effect of what you hope. Rather than helping you feel a little more awake, it can actually make you feel worse causing you to feel sluggish and making your body crave sleep even more.

Facing the day bravely, and praying that the day goes by quickly, is the best thing you can do. Hitting snooze is likely to make your body fall into the start of a sleep cycle causing the increased intensity of tiredness you feel.

Get Up And Get Straight In The Shower

An obvious one, but even if you took a shower the night before, it is a good idea to have a warm shower in the morning to help you feel refreshed, energized and awake. It will not only help you feel a lot more human rather than a tired-eyed crabby monster, but a good body exfoliator and moisturizer will help to alleviate the dullness that comes from a bad night’s sleep and help your skin look bright and revived.

Make Time For A Hot Drink

Whatever your morning drink of choice is, try to set aside a little time to sit down for five minutes and let the caffeine enter your system. Even if you like to avoid caffeinated coffee or tea, opting for a matcha green tea could really help you feel the needed boost to get out of the house in the morning.

In addition to enhancing your energy levels, matcha tea is also high in antioxidants and helps you feel calmer – especially helpful when you’re running late for a busy day. It will also boost your concentration which is perfect for a long day in the office or an important presentation.

Don’t Skimp On Your Skincare

After a bad night’s sleep, it is common to look in the mirror and notice your eye lines and bags are more prominent, and your skin looks lifeless and dull. It may seem like you just don’t have the time but making it a point to do your full morning skincare routine will really help you look more awake and put together.

Start off by using a couple of cold spoons, cool slices of cucumber, or a cooling gel eye mask to help with the stinging and squinting that accompany tired eyes with a lack of sleep. It will also help alleviate some of the puffiness, helping your eyes appear open and awake.

You could even use some brightening eye drops to put the sparkle, quite literally, back in your eyes. Then using a soft brush – like the head of your Clarisonic or facial cleansing brush – dry brush your facial skin just like you would for the skin on your arms or legs. This will get the blood flowing, and sweep away any dull, dead skin.

Then going in with a skin-drenching moisturizer, and really taking some time to massage it into the skin, will not only help alleviate any dryness or dehydration set in through the night, but it will also assist by giving you a smooth base for applying your makeup. After all, good skincare is the best foundation.

The Wonders Of Makeup

It may feel like you have to give the bright-eyed, bushy tail a miss for the day – but that’s not necessarily the case. After your skincare routine, an under eye corrector and a little touch of highlight in your makeup routine will help you look like you’ve had the best night’s sleep in the world. This won’t add too much time to achieving your usual daily look, but it will make a world of difference in avoiding that tired look.

Using a concealer that is a shade lighter than your foundation will also help brighten your under eye and counteract any bags or darkness caused by tiredness. Also, if you usually skip the step of curling your eyelashes, a tired day is definitely a day to add that step into your routine, if your mascara doesn’t do the trick on its own. Any step that is going to help your eyes appear bright and wide will help you appear bright and alert – even though you may not feel it.

Have A Healthy, Filling Breakfast

Even if it just a quick banana on the way to your commute or just as you’re running out the door, having something with slow releasing energy will help you feel energized throughout the day. Even though after a bad night it is tempting to go for something packed with fat and sugar like a doughnut or chocolate, these foods will only add to your sluggish feeling and make you feel even more fatigued. Fatty foods use more energy to break down – that same energy you need to keep going. Sticking to the healthier option, though it may be hard, will boost your energy levels noticeably.

There you have it! A few sure-fire ways to appear like you’ve had a relaxing eight hours sleep when in reality it was quite the opposite. You definitely won’t be the first or the last to struggle to sleep well before a busy, important day, so these tips may come in handy many more times than just once. They will help you have a productive, successful day so you can lay your head down at the end of the day feeling accomplished, and ready for a blissful night of much-needed sleep.

What are some of your tips for looking bright-eyed after a night of little to no sleep?
