Should Exercise Be Fun or Difficult to be Effective?

When it comes to exercise, everybody has a different view on whether it is actually good or effective for us or not, depending on the type of exercise we do. Some people do a brisk walk and think that is enough to stave off any health problems, while others love the burn of a severe workout routine. Some feel like they are completely allergic to it. A lot of people may think that some time with a personal trainer is incredibly difficult, but what is the reality when it comes to exercise…should it be fun, or should it be hard work?

Effective Exercise Isn’t Easy

When It’s Difficult…

The thing about exercise is that you are doing it right when it’s difficult. For those who claim to be “allergic” to exercise (lol), the fact is that in order to build muscle you need to tear muscle fibers so you can rebuild them. This builds your muscle, which improves your strength.

Ultimately, the tension in those muscles is what is going to help at the end of the day, hence the expression “push for the burn.” You should be going for a difficult workout if you want the best results. This is why something like the Body By Science approach to workouts has had good outcomes for beginner weightlifters because it’s so difficult!

But, Can It Be Fun?

In reality, it can be. But it needs to also have a great overall impact on your health. Exercise can be fun, yes, but something like walking (while it benefits you in terms of getting outdoors and moving) won’t necessarily burn a ton of calories. However, some exercises can be fun and companies and trainers are trying to make exercise more fun to draw in more people.

Zumba is a very good example of this.  You can do a Zumba dance workout with a trainer to get the best results. But ultimately it will still hurt, meaning you are doing things right, within reason. Remember if something is just downright painful, that’s when you should stop. If it burns, it’s more beneficial. Feel the burn!

The Key To Building Muscle…

The best way to build muscle it is to change up your exercise routine approximately every two months because your muscles will adapt very quickly. So in this respect, exercising has to be difficult enough for you to reap the benefits and not get stuck in a plateau. It’s best not to kid yourself that you will enjoy every aspect of exercise. Being realistic about it does build resilience and will help you in the long run.

The Most Important Thing…

You can’t exercise your way out of poor health. Diet is the most important thing, and a lot of people think that they can eat anything they want if they stay in shape. This isn’t true unless you are exercising until you’re blue in the face all the time. Ultimately, exercise is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, and diet is the other part. As they say, abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. It’s like a car; you wouldn’t put the wrong fuel in your car, so why would you put the wrong fuel into yourself?
