Most people have great results in the beginning but rarely stick with it long term or don’t continue making progress once they’ve gone off their “diet”. There is so much information out there regarding diets. A new fad diet comes out at least twice a year, various foods are dismissed as unhealthy or proclaimed as healthy again, and new miracle pills promise a quick resolution to your weight loss goals. It’s all confusing, and most of it is misleading, considering this is such an important area of health. Fortunately, I have a few tips that will form the foundation of the only diet plan you will ever need to lose weight and be healthy.

* Avoid ‘Diet’ Foods *

You might think you’re being good by having a low-fat snack instead of the full-fat version, but you’re actually doing more harm than good. Researchers at Cornell University found that overweight people who choose low-fat versions of snack foods consume, on average, twice as many calories. This is because most companies add twice as much sugar to these sweet products to improve the flavor after the “fat” has been removed.

If you want something sweet, just go ahead and have the full-fat version. You’re not committing a sin if you have a small slice of cake every once in a while. You can even work it off with an extra ten minutes of exercise if you feel guilty. But only have it if you are committed to either working off those calories or not eating it often.

* Count Calories Wisely *

Regardless of what some fad diets will say, it’s not healthy to cut your daily calorie intake too much – in fact, it can be pretty dangerous. Cutting down your intake to less than 1000 calories can lead to heart problems, digestive problems, nutrient deficiencies, and it causes your body to destroy muscle tissue, which is an unhealthy form of weight loss.

* Moderation *

I’m pretty sure you’ve heard this before but it’s true. Healthy eating is just as much about how much you eat as it is about what you eat. With so many different diets out there, moderation is something you can always rely on. Let’s say you decide to make a vegetarian lasagna at home, but you use half the amount of cheese you normally use. The meal is healthy, but you’re still going to gain weight if you have a massive portion of lasagna. So, try eating only half of the portion you usually serve yourself. After a week or so, you may realize that you are really satisfied with less and you won’t be so quick to overeat.

* Drink Plenty of Water *

We know hunger can be mistaken for thirst, yet many people still snack instead of drinking. Some try to quench their thirst with juice or iced tea, without realizing that these beverages are also filled with sugar. If water is too boring for you, add fresh fruit for a refreshing and healthy infusion. There are many pitchers and water bottles on the market for drinking infused water.

As a rule of thumb, try to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. This will help you eat less, helps improve the appearance of your skin, it’s great for your digestive system, and helps flush toxins.

  1. Marsha, you have nailed it! I am a less than a kilogram away from my ideal weight and have been pretty much doing everything in here. It’s a sustainable way of eating, I’m satisfied with smaller portions and enjoy the occasional treat.
