How to Overcome a Weight Loss Plateau

The more you exercise, the more weight you will lose, right? Well, it doesn’t always work like that. There are lots of people who have found that they haven’t lost any weight by upping their exercise routine. Some may have found that their weight loss has hit a plateau.

Thankfully, there are ways to get over the hump of that discouraging plateau. You just need to figure out which one of these mistakes you might be making and try and do something about it!

Reasons For Hitting a Plateau

You Haven’t Changed Your Diet

To make sure you keep on losing weight at a steady and healthy rate, you need to make sure that you change your diet as well. Simply working out without watching what you eat on a daily basis isn’t going to do you any favors. Ideally, you should also try to increase your protein intake as this can help your body recover fully after any workouts. If you don’t give your body a good chance of recovering, you might cause yourself to get injured!

You’re Not Doing Cardio

What type of exercise and workouts are you doing to help shift the pounds? If you aren’t doing some cardio, such as jogging, cycling, or HIIT classes, then it’s going to take longer to drop a dress size. It’s true that you do burn a lot of calories by doing strength training, such as weightlifting, but there is no better calorie burner than plenty of cardio! Even better, combine cardio with strength training for a bigger fat burning boost.

You Don’t Have Good Sleeping Habits

There are so many weight loss myths out there about how various aspects of our lifestyle have an impact on our weight. One part of your lifestyle that actually does have a very big influence on weight loss is how you sleep. Lots of studies show that people who get a full seven to eight hours of sleep needed each night are much more likely to achieve their weight loss goals. Not only that, but they will also have better mental health.

Your Expectations Aren’t Realistic

Maybe you have lost weight – it’s just not as much as you had expected to lose by now. Lots of people have some pretty big expectations when they start to work out and try to get more fit. However, to make sure you stay motivated, you shouldn’t set your expectations too high. It’s good to have goals, but they need to be realistic and achievable. For example, if your long-term goal is to lose 20 pounds, start by setting smaller goals like losing 2 to 5 pounds at a time, within realistic time frames.

You Need To Move More

Even if you are going to the gym a few times a week, your body eventually gets used to it and it won’t be enough movement for your body on its own. Especially if you have a very sedentary job. You need to make sure that you move more throughout the day and don’t sit down too much. One way to do this is to get a pedometer. Ideally, you need to reach 10,000 steps every day. There various types on the market these days at different price points. My personal favorite is the FitBit HR and I love that I can enter daily challenges with others and do personal challenges by myself.
